Ethan began his chess journey at the age of five right here at Vancouver Chess School. By eight, he had already captured his first national championship, setting the stage for a remarkable competitive career filled with multiple provincial and national titles.
At nine, Ethan spent several years training in Beijing, China, where he honed his skills under the guidance of a renowned Grandmaster. Upon returning to Canada, he played a key role in helping Team BC win its first national team title in 34 years—a historic moment for chess in British Columbia.
Ethan's passion for chess is reflected not only in his achievements but also in his commitment to improvement. His Chess.com bullet rating once soared to 3048, with a blitz peak of 2799. In August 2024, just before turning 15, he earned the title of FIDE Master—becoming the youngest FM in BC at the time.
In March 2025, Ethan reached a new milestone by earning his first International Master (IM) norm at a prestigious tournament in Seattle.
Beyond the board, Ethan is deeply dedicated to mentoring the next generation of players. He serves as an assistant coach at Sunday Chess Club, where his students admire not only his knowledge and calm demeanor but also his legendary puzzle-solving speed—Ethan holds the school record with 121 positions solved in just 10 minutes!
We are proud to have Ethan as a shining example of what hard work, humility, and passion can achieve.
