B. C. Youth Chess Championship (BCYCC) 2014

What is B. C. Youth Chess Championship (BCYCC)? 

BCYCC is a qualifier event to the Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC) which will take place in Montreal, Quebec from Jul 15 to Jul 18, 2014. CYCC top finishers will be awarded with travel bursary and be invited to officially represent Canada at the international chess competitions including the World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC) in South Africa this fall.

How can I qualify to take part at CYCC?

Players who scored 50% (2.5 points) at regional BCCC and meet Chess Federation of Canada requirements for residency or citizenship to qualify for the CYCC. BCYCC is one of the qualifiers. Victoria Junior Chess is also hosting a YCC on April 18 in Grand Pacific Hotel in Victoria. However, if you are one of the top rated players in the province and/or are former CYCC champions, you may be qualified to CYCC without attending regional event.  Please refer to the qualification details at the CYCC official website. Who can play at BCYCC?

It is open to all BC students born in 1996 or later.

Date:   Apr 4, 5 & 6 (Friday to Sunday)

 

Check in time: Door opens at 6:00pm. For those who are preregistered and have already paid, you will be paired for the first round. If you are late arriving, you will lose time off you clock until you arrive to a maximum of one hour, at which point you will lose the game by forfeit.  Failure to appear during any round without prior arrangements will be treated as a withdrawal from the tournament, unless the TD decides otherwise.

Format:  5 Rounds Swiss System. CFC rated. CFC Membership is not required.

Time control:  G/90mins+30sec increment (Chess sets and clocks are provided)

Bye request:   Maximum 2 requested ½ point byes (except last round) at least ½ hour before the rounds start.

Prizes:   Trophies are awarded to the top 3 finishers in each section. Champions of each section will receive support towards the CYCC. They are also eligible to participate in GM training sessions that held on Apr 12, 27 & May 4.

 

Entry Fees$65 (Early bird discount before midnight Mar 26) $75 (Mar 27 or later). Family discount $10 off for 2nd or higher member of the family.

Registration:   Please register and pay online only. You can pay cash at Vancouver Chess School before the deadline stated above. No onsite registration is allowed.

Q & A: 

1. Is chess notation required?

Chess notation is mandatory. Score-sheets are provided. Please bring your own pens or pencils. 

 

2.  I don’t have CFC rating.

We will use your NWSRS rating for pairing purposes. If you possess neither a CFC nor NWSRS rating, we will pair you as an unrated player. Unrated players will receive a new ID and rating after the event that can be used for future tournaments. All players will receive their rating within a week after the tournament is completed, and can be accessed online.

 

3. Do I have to pay any membership fees?

No membership fee is required.

 

4. I do not have a credit card, can I pay when I arrive?

We encourage all players to register and pay online in advance. So we can plan ahead and organize the tournament according to schedule. You can pay cash at Vancouver Chess School before the deadline stated above. No onsite registration is allowed.  

 

5. Will I get a refund if my child is sick?  Any refund if my child withdraws during the tournament?

Full refund is available if you cancel the registration at least 48hours prior to the tournament date. For those who have VCS online account, you can get a full refund by cancelling the tournament online within the timeline stated as above. For those who log in as “guests”, please email us to request a refund within the same timeline. No refund is allowed under any other circumstances after the 48 hour time line. NO refund will be granted to any withdrawal during the tournament.

 

6. When is the first round start? What if I am late?

We schedule to start the first round at 6:30pm and we will strive to start the tournament punctually. For those who are preregistered and have already paid, you will be paired for the first round. 7. Are the parents allowed inside the tournament room?

No parents are allowed inside the tournament room except 5-mins picture time before the round starts.

 

8. Can I bring food or eat inside the tournament room?

Due to allergies concern, no food and other beverages are allowed inside the tournament room. You can bring your own water bottle but we are not responsible for your belongings.

 

9. When will the tournament finish? When is the award ceremony?

As soon as all the games are finished in all sections. We estimate the tournament will finish at around 6:30pm. Award ceremony will be held right afterwards.

 

10. How do I know if I am qualified for the Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC)?

We will post the results online (VCS under “events”) after the tournament is completed. The early bird discount to register CYCC is $225 before Jun 10. Please refer to their website for details http://echecsmontreal.ca/cycc/info_en.html
